SYDNEY HAYWARD WHITESELL Passed away on June 4, 2014 at the Penticton Regional Hospital, succumbing to head injuries from a fall. Syd was predeceased by his wife Iris and parents Henry and Elsie. He leaves to mourn his daughter Melodye; grandson Rio; brother Wrayburn (Nola); niece Jocelyn (Juris); nephew Mark (Mary Ellen) their daughters Summer and Erin; girlfriend Audrey Sommers; and many other nieces, nephews and cousins. Syd was born March 27, 1927 in Victoria, BC and was raised in Vancouver. During high school he was an outstanding lacrosse and rugby player and played for the Ex-Brits after graduating. Syd graduated from UBC in 1965 and was a long time elementary school teacher at Nkwala and Uplands Schools in Penticton. Prior to that he was a meat cutter and Salvation Army Officer (stationed in The Pas, Yorkton, Swift Current, Indian Head, Carlton Place, Estevan and Meadow Lake). Syd and family moved to Penticton in 1965 and was involved in the Salvation Army and Alliance churches, member of the Penticton Ham Radio Club, long-time Ironman volunteer, computer instructor at the Seniors Centre and a huge Penticton Vees fan. He played the cornet for many years in bands at Grandview, the Vancouver Temple and Penticton Salvation Army Corps. Syd will be missed by everyone who had the privilege to know him. Celebration of life will be Friday, June 6, 2014 at 12:30 p.m. at the Penticton Salvation Army. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Syd's memory can be made to the Penticton Salvation Army or a charity of your choice.
