RAFUSE, Ian Reid After a brief illness, and lovingly surrounded by family, Ian Reid Rafuse, 76, passed away at Kelowna General Hospital on June 27, 2014. Blessed with an inordinate amount of energy and determination, a curious mind and a great wit - Ian accomplished much in his life. Born in Meadow Lake, Sk., he grew up in Winnipeg and later lived in Toronto and Vancouver before retiring in Kelowna. After graduating from United College, Ian began his professional career as a manager at Eaton's. Subsequently, he became certified as a CMA and in 1963 joined IBM where his work took him around the globe. Eventually he left IBM to form his own consulting company called Group West, which he later sold to Ernst and Young. He then spent a few years with CIBC, finally rejoining IBM where he worked as a Senior Executive Consultant until his retirement in 2003. Ian enjoyed many interests and passions. For instance, there was not a sport he didn't follow avidly. But, he was more than a spectator. As a natural athlete, and highly competitive, he played a mean game of hockey, basketball, lacrosse, golf - and in his younger years - serious bridge. In mid life he became a marathon runner - completing over 20 international marathons with a best time of 3:18. He loved movies, history, art, and collecting antiques, but perhaps his deepest passion was architecture. Over the years, with each home he owned, he refined his carpentry and design skills. His home in Markham, north of Toronto, designed when he was 31, stands as a testament to his artistic vision. His final achievement, after 15 years of planning, designing and building, was his retirement home outside Kelowna. Literally and physically - he put his heart and soul into this home, suffering many physical ailments during construction. Ian was born in Meadow Lake on Feb. 21, 1938 to Margaret Mabel Helen (Braid) and Elwood Reid Rafuse, M.D. His father, who graduated from Harvard Medical School, became a legend in that part of the prairies. Ian was predeceased by his parents, and is survived by sister Sheilagh Yuschyshyn, Toronto, and brother Maynard, London, U.K.,and families. He is also survived by five children: Elena (Neil) Williams, Vancouver; Diana (Gregg) Wilkinson, Kelowna; Christopher (Joanne Pindera), Dar es Salaam, Tanzania; and Jennifer and Jeremy, Winnipeg - as well as eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Ian was cremated, and with love and laughter family and friends bid him a final farewell at his beloved home in Kelowna on July 2, 2014. e cineribus resurgo If desired, donations to the BC SPCA Kelowna would be appreciated.
