Ruth Elizabeth Cox 1913 - 2014 Ruth Elizabeth Cox (nee Sheffield) passed away in Penticton on August 28, 2014. Predeceased by her husband, W. E. (Ted) Cox, Ruth leaves her children, Ann, Port Hope, John (Lily), Ottawa and Mary (Roger Neil), Halifax. Also survived by her four grandchildren Hri and Clare Neil, Zachary and Jordana Cox. Following the death of her husband Ted in 1976, Ruth moved from Toronto to establish a new life in Penticton. The Okanagan allowed her to embrace a life-long love of nature. Excursions with the South Okanagan Naturalists and trips into BC's parks were wonderful opportunities and valued memories. A child of the Great Depression, Ruth acquired a practical, self-reliant and independent attitude that featured in raising her family, as well as contributing to communities in which she lived. Whether sewing clothes for herself and her children, knitting layettes for newborns or growing gardens wherever she lived, Ruth found ways to share her talents. She volunteered with the Penticton Regional Hospital and delivered Meals on Wheels until well into her nineties. Starting with girlhood friends and her family building years Ruth acquired and retained lifelong friends in Ontario, Quebec, the United States and England. Many made the trip to visit her in Penticton where over the years she established many new friendships. Madelaine and Lee Hicks, Alice Pringle, Dolly Doermer and Irene Hutton were friends who provided additional support and companionship to Ruth in the recent months when her physical independence was compromised but she treasured all the friends who contributed in her words to " such a fortunate life."
