PIVON, Joseph Steve: Born May 28, 1931 in the Ferencvaros district of Budapest, Hungary, Jozsef Istvan (Joseph Steve) Pivon could be considered one of the 9th District's most colorful personalities. As an impoverished youth in the war-torn country following WWI, Joe learned to survive and support his younger siblings using charm, street-smarts, and when all else failed, his fists. This eventually led to an amateur athletic career as a contender for the Olympics in boxing. This was unfortunately cut short following the Forced Labor of Hungarians in the Soviet Union, where he was imprisoned and forced to work the coal mines until his escape during the 1956 Hungarian Uprising. Joe eventually came to Canada under refugee status, working as a manual labourer in various industries. From hospitality to forestry, mining, healthcare and construction, Joe lived the classic story of a New Canadian. Always proud of his heritage, but eager to be a Canadian, he learned the language and culture of the country that would become his home. Following the marriage to his wife, Friedl, and the birth of their son, Mark, Joe fulfilled his calling to settle down. For the next 22 years, he was a committed family man, a dedicated employee of CN/VIA Rail, and a loyal brother of Local 283 until his retirement. He was best known among his friends as a man who loved song and dance, good coffee, and a thick steak (which he enjoyed with rye bread only, and maybe an occasional tomato or pepper.) He will also be missed by many a car salesman who encouraged him to "trade in that year-old-clunker." He was passionate about travel and especially real estate, which combined to satisfy his gypsy spirit in retirement. Joe will be forever remembered by his wife and partner of 48 years, Friedl, son Mark (Joanne), and his two grandchildren, Ryan and Liam. The family wishes to acknowledge the support provided by Cottonwoods Care Centre and Dr. Adrian Morris. As per the families request there will be no formal service.
