PINKNEY, Phyllis Clenwood: Phyllis died peacefully after a short illness in her home at Haven Hill, surrounded by the love of her family. Born in England on the 19th of August 1925, youngest child of Elizabeth and James Jewsbury, Phyllis was predeceased by her husband Joe and her sisters and brothers. She is survived by her three children: Elaine (Terry) Swan, Yvonne (Brian) Egerton and Frank (Debra) Pinkney; grandchildren, Colin (Michaela) Swan, Ian (Yvette) Swan, Jane Anne (Scott) Windsor, Leslee (Matt) Ledger, and Brent Pinkney. Phyllis was very proud to be Great Grand Nana to Ella, Ben, Aquinnah, Maya, Chloe, Miles and Everleigh. Many nieces and nephews in Canada and England will also mourn her passing. As a young teen, Phyllis witnessed the Battle of Britain and joined the Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF), in 1942, as an aircraft mechanic - because she didn't want to be "the usual cook or clerk." Her work on Lancaster and Halifax bombers led to her meeting a Royal Canadian Air Force Bomber crewman, Joseph Pinkney. They fell in love and were married on December 23, 1944. Phyllis and Joe started their family in England and as a "war bride" she joined her husband in Vancouver after traveling 6,000 miles by ship and train with her six month old baby. Two more children were then added to the Pinkney family. Phyllis was progressive for her time, and when her three children were in school, she attended university classes, eventually achieving teaching certification. She taught special needs young people in Vancouver and Penticton after her move here in 1963. She felt her greatest achievement during her years of teaching was to be instrumental in bringing the Training Centre to Penticton. In later years she became proficient in needlework, producing many beautiful, coveted embroidered pieces. She was also an animal lover, and always had a cat or dog by her side. Phyllis lost her Joe in 2000, and as her health began to decline, she took up residence at Haven Hill. Her family would like to thank the staff at Lower Peach, Haven Hill, for the care and love they gave Mom during the past year. Your love was reciprocated. A Memorial Service will be held in the spring of 2015, details will be announced when available. Condolences may be shared by visiting www.everdenrust.com
