With peaceful sadness in our hearts we announce the passing of our generous and kind mother Betty. She will be lovingly remembered by her two sons Mike(Crystal Vermillion) of California and Doug(Dawn) of Penticton; sister Louise; grandchildren Martin, Shauna(Brett), Leanne, Sandra, Rebecca(Phil), Tim and great grandchildren Mark, Patrick, David, Emma, Carter, Holly, Cameron and Nolan; and her lifelong friend Winnie. She was predeceased by parents Doug and Pearl Parkes, husband Ed(1995), second son Ken(2013) and grandson David(1985). Betty was born in Portland Oregon but lived her first 36 years in Vancouver, where she met Ed, the boy next door, who she eventually married in 1944, during WWII. Betty volunteered assembling parts for fighter planes as a "Rosie the Riveter" while he served in the RCN. After the war she had their three boys and then the family moved to Ottawa in 1960, for Ed's work with the Royal Canadian Legion Dominion Command. Living in the small community of Manotick she liked gardening and being an active member of the curling club and entertaining friends at their home. In 1990 they moved back west to Red Wing Resorts in Penticton, BC. After Ed died, Betty stayed on in their home on the Okanagan River Channel enjoying the many friends and family who came to visit and have a glass of wine with her on the back deck. In 2011 she moved into Athens Creek Retirement Lodge and once again made new friendships. Many thanks to her wonderful Dr's Leona and Jeff Harries, and also a big thank you to the caring nursing staff on the second floor of the Penticton Hospital who made our last few days with Mom so comforting. Betty and Ed are resting together in Lakeview Cemetery. There will be no service. A simple celebration of her life will be held in April 2015.
