STEED, Barbara Bernice: April 26, 1937 - January 2, 2015. Barbs passed away quietly with family at her side on January 2, 2015 at Kelowna General Hospital. She had struggled for years with COPD and emphysema and succumbed to pneumonia. She is survived by her sons, Chuck Ulmer and Bill Ulmer (Susie), three grandchildren: Jesse, Randeana and Kylie Ulmer and a great grandson, Christian. She is also survived by her sister, Charlotte Truswell and several nieces, nephews, cousins, two aunts and an uncle. Barbs was predeceased by her infant daughter Laurie, parents Charlie and Ethel Penson, sister and brother-in-law Joyce and John Smart as well as nephews Tommy, Jimmy and Bob Smart. Born in Grande Prairie, Alberta, Barbs also lived in Kelowna, Oliver and Gibsons and returned to Kelowna to retire in 2011. Her working career included several years at Pemberton Securities in Kelowna where she eventually became a stockbroker. She was also a part-owner of South Winds Hotel in Oliver before becoming a realtor in Kelowna. Barbs excelled in all sports when she was younger especially softball. She was an ardent curler and was on several rinks advancing to BC Provincial playdowns in the 1960's and 1970's. Her love and sense of loyalty for her family and friends was solid, steady and heartfelt. She had a hilarious sense of humour and kept it to the end. She dearly loved her BFF Nancy Gies and Nan's family and was so appreciative of their love and kindness for herself and for a special little dog Meiko. Her family wishes to thank all those who helped care for Barbs, especially Dr. Jan McIntosh, Dr. Doug Rolf, Katerina Medina as well as the exceptional staff at the Okanagan Chateau. We will all miss her deeply. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. "Love lives on in the hearts of all who remember and care."
