BATTAGIN, Charles "Gary": November 14, 1941 - Edmonton, Alberta May 10, 2015 - Calgary, Alberta. Gary Battagin of Calgary passed away on Sunday, May 10, 2015 at the age of 73 years after a long illness. Gary was a commercial pilot and business man. He missed his calling, as he would have loved to have been an RCMP officer like his best friend, Don McDermid. While living in Whitecourt, Gary went on ride alongs, and totally entertained the officers with his tales and with his humour. When he left Whitecourt, the local detachment gave a party for him along with a parting gift of a framed commendation and an RCMP painting, signed by everyone there. Wherever Gary went, he made people laugh with his unique style of humour. In the end, he lived his life the way he wanted, doing the things he loved with friends. He will be missed by them, and especially by his special friend, George Samchuk. Gary is survived by his children, Lisa Schuster and David (Ki) Battagin, as well as his grandchildren, Devon Schuster, Chelsea Schuster, and Michael Battagin, his sister, Doreen Olynyk, and nieces Cara Graham and Heather Johannsen, sister-in-law Ellen Battagin, niece and nephew Becky Battagin and Mario Battagin. He was predeceased his infant son Alan, his parents Mary and Mario Battagin, brother Rowland Battagin and brother-in-law John Olynyk. His urn will be buried near his infant son, Alan, in Mayerthorpe, in the summer, where a celebration of his life will take place.
