LYON, Joan Marion: Jan. 20, 1927 May 28, 2015 Joan passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at Trinity Care Centre, Penticton on May 28, 2015. She is survived by her eldest daughter, Lynda Lyon; son, Peter Lyon; her youngest daughter, Shelley Kanke as well as three grandchildren, Harlen Miller, Alexandra Kanke and Tayler Kanke. Joan was born a Macgregor on January 20, 1927 in Hamilton, Ontario. She was an only child; her father a doctor and her mother a dietician. After her father sadly passed away, her mother remarried and the family moved to North Bay, Ontario. A graduate of the University of Western Ontario in London, Joan then went to perform her internship at the Montreal Civic Hospital. She chose this hospital because the doctor that created the diabetic diet (still used today) was working there. Always wanting to move west, she read in the Toronto newspaper about an opening in Oliver, BC for a Home Ec. teacher, so she made the move. In 1951 she took a position at Penticton Regional Hospital as a dietician and later became the director of dietetics during her 25 years there. It was there she met and married her husband, Stewart Lyon, a native of Penticton. Stewart's father, Robert Lyon, was the first mayor of Penticton. Joan and Stewart's first child, Lynda was born with Down Syndrome so Joan became very involved and is a lifetime member with the Society for the Mentally Handicapped in Penticton, now known as Penticton & District Society for Community Living. She was also very active in several other charities. After retirement, Joan enjoyed traveling and took an extensive cruise around South America. Other interests of Joan's included: reading, music, horse racing and gambling. She will be deeply missed. Joan had requested there be no memorial service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Condolences may be shared by visiting www.everdenrust.com
