NOVAK, MYLES STANLEY: Born September 30, 1938 passed away peacefully at home in Parksville on August 12th. Predeceased by their infant son Stephen, Myles is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Adriana (Anne), daughters Catherine, Patti and son David (Lisa); Catherine's three sons, Daniel, Benjamin and Stephen; Patti's daughter Mia and son Floyd; David and Lisa's sons Mitchell and Curtis, and by sister Kerin Mana of Bellingham, WA. Myles was born September 30, 1938 in Calgary and initially attended a one-room school (9 grades) across the road from the family farm in Lyalta, Alberta, followed by schools in Strathmore and San Diego, California. After studying engineering for a year at San Diego State, Myles embarked upon the first of three separate careers when he returned to Canada and joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police at age 18. He trained in Regina, then was posted to British Columbia where he served for 24 years at various detachments throughout the province. When he retired from his position in 1982, he was in charge of the plainclothes investigative section at Kelowna Detachment. His second career began when he received his accountant's and financial planner's designations, and practiced for several years in Kelowna. During this time, Myles became involved in federal politics, and was a founding member of the Reform Party of Canada. His activities led to his third career of thirteen years as Executive Assistant to his Member of Parliament. In addition to these occupations, Myles was often found with a hammer in his hand and a tape measure in his pocket, having started building homes with his father as a teenager. He built or finished several of his own homes, and from 2005 to 2014 partnered with his son David on their company, Arbutus Lane Homes. Throughout Myles' adult life he was actively involved in community organizations, service clubs and coaching minor sports, devoting countless enjoyable hours to these endeavors. Personal relationships were always one of Myles' priorities, and he actively maintained contact with his many friends and former workmates, but his greatest enjoyment came from the closeness of his family. We extend heartfelt thanks to the Nanaimo Regional Hospital Cancer Clinic, Medical Daycare, Dr Denegri, and a special thank you to Dr Stephen Noble and the Parksville Home Care Nurses for their excellent care. A Memorial Service will be held at our home at 12 Constantine Place, Parksville on August 22, 2015 from 1:30 pm to 4:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your charity of choice in memory of Myles.
