COURTNEY, Justin Louis Peacefully at the residence at Orchard Manor in Kelowna, on Saturday, April 5, 2014, at the age of 94 years. Born August 28, 1919 in St John's, Nfld to Hilda and Joseph Courtney. Predeceased by his parents, his sister Elizabeth and his brother Joseph. Survived by his beloved wife of 69 years Una Courtney, Kelowna, BC; brother John Courtney (Louise), Ottawa, ON; sons: Peter Courtney (Carole) Kelowna, BC, Joseph (Sally) Courtney, Ottawa, ON, Robert Courtney (Mardy), Edmonton, AB; and grandchildren: Ian Courtney, Amy Crowson, John-Andrew Courtney and Heather Burnett. He was an athlete in high school. Interested in weather observations, he was recruited by the Canadian weather services and in 1947 he headed the six-man Canadian-United States team that established the weather station at Eureka, Nunavut. He continued to work for the Meterological Branch in Toronto. An avid furniture maker, he had one shortened forefinger to prove it. In 1959, he moved the family to Ottawa to work for Airports, Transport Canada and ended 35 years of service in 1977 in Edmonton working on the Calgary Airport terminal expansion. He and Una retired to Naramata, and later to Penticton, BC where Justin sang in the Tune-Agers choir, and was busy gardening, boating (raced sailboats on Lake Okanagan and cruised Vancouver Island with his buddies), RVing (was wagon-master for the local club's annual treks to Arizona), bird-watching, square-dancing and spending time with family and friends. When health became a problem, they moved to the Hawthorn retirement home in Kelowna in 2010 to be close to his son Peter and grandson Ian and their families. A true survivor, he walked away from a plane crash in the forties and was saddened that virtually all of his high school graduation class had perished in the Battle of the North Atlantic in World War II. Donations to Moog & Friends Hospice House, Penticton. Cremation arrangements in care of Everden Rust Funeral Services, (250) 860-6440. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting everdenrust.com
