William Charles (Bill) Smith Born in Alliance Alberta October 20, 1922. Bill passed away peacefully June 20, 2013. Predeceased by Jean, his loving wife of 59 years. Survived by children Ellen, Brian (Lin), Bella, Aubrey (Sharron), Raleigh (Jodi), Susan (Gary), Heather (Emil), and Kimberly. Grandchildren Steve, Ron, Lindsay (Louis), Kirby, Jesse (Hilary), Bradley, Tamara, Brian, Amanda, David, Charlie and Billy. Great Grandchildren Emily, Grace, Ellie. Many nieces and nephews. Bill was a veteran of WWII having served in Italy, France and Holland with the Loyal Edmonton Regiment. He was an original West Bencher who enjoyed hunting, fishing, country music and vacations in Hawaii with Mom. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Bill's life on August 4, 2013 at 3:00 pm at the Family Home on the West Bench. The family would like to thank the staff and volunteers at Village by the Station, especially the Cottage 3B staff, for their friendship and kind, compassionate care for Dad. WALMSLEY, Wayne 1940 - 2013 It is with profound sadness and a sense of great loss that the family of Wayne Walmsley announces his sudden passing on Tuesday, June 25, 2013. He was 72 years of age. He will be forever missed by his loving wife and best friend Viv; four daughters: Lorelei Widmann (Walter), Suzanne Martens (Sandy), Melissa Klassen (Dwayne), and Tanya Kwan; 12 grandchildren: Chris (Shylo), Josh (Katie), Jason (Shelby), Kevin, Justin (Jamie), Jenna (Scott), Julie, Richard, Jeff, Teghan, Braela, Lexynn; 4 great grandsons: Brayden, Emmett, Kylen and Karston. He is survived by his brothers and sisters: Orval (Alta), Shorty (Edith), Aileen, Iris (Butch), Sharon (Don), Lorne (Charlotte), Pat, Ila (Kevin), Janice, sister-in-law, Irene (Jesse) and numerous nieces and nephews. Wayne was born November 4, 1940 in Swan River, Manitoba. He grew up in Crowsnest Pass, Alberta, moving to Mica Creek to work on the dam as a loader operator. When it closed he moved his family to Vernon, BC to start up his own excavating business, Wayne's Excavating. Upon retirement, he and his wife Viv moved to Kelowna, BC. He was an accomplished equipment operator, subcontracting to BC Gas and MarWest. His greatest joys in his life were his family, spending time at the lake, puttering around in his yard and taking great pride in his gardening. He loved flying model airplanes with his son-in-law Walter. His kindness, generosity and humour touched the lives of all who knew him. He always put others first over himself. Anyone fortunate enough to spend time with him will have an imprint in their heart forever. A celebration of life service will be held Sunday, June 30 at 1:00 PM, open house to follow 2:00 - 4:00, Ellison Hall, 4411 Old Vernon Road, Kelowna, BC. CARLSEN, Thelma Joyce: Joyce passed away after a brief illness on June 18, 2013 at the age of 84 years. She was born in 1928, was married to Henry Arthur Carlsen and lived in Okanagan Falls and Penticton for many years. Joyce loved to spend time with her friends, arts and crafts, and working on her collection of ceramic clowns. She was sadly predeceased by her brother Ron Dill and three sisters, Lorraine, Shirley and Ruth. Joyce will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her husband Henry, step-children Beverly Harmon, Janette Peake, and Alfred "Sonny" Carlsen as well as 4 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews. Survived by his sons; Darko (Laura) of Prince George, Joseph; three grandchildren, Cohen, Kaleb, Liam; three brothers, Slobodan, Jozo, Barry; three sisters, Dana, Regina, Smiljanka and their families, as well as his large extended family, especially Bubba. THURM, Edna Arlene Feb. 8, 1919 - June 27, 2013 Edna passed away peacefully at the age of 94 years at Cottonwoods Extended Care Centre on June 27, 2013. Edna was born and raised in a small farming community at Govan, Saskatchewan to parents Andrew and Ruth Sundwall. She moved to Regina to work and met her future husband Paul. They both worked for Chrysler Corp. and later transferred to Vancouver. They moved to Kelowna in 1989. She was predeceased by her brother Norm in 2001, husband Paul in 2007 and sister Lorene in 2013. She is survived by sister Aldoris Thompson (Don); brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews and friends. There will be a graveside service at Lakeview Memorial Gardens at a later date. KRUGER, Gerhard (Gary) Went to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 30, 2013 at the age of 80 years, at the Vernon Hospice House. Survived by his long-time partner in life, Theresa Gaudet; daughter Jacqueline Bibault (Uwe); granddaughter Tara Hogge and Brandi Bibault and two great grandsons: Kalebb and Tristan. Predeceased by his wife Ilse. Gary will be remembered for the love he had for his family, friends and for his support of needy children. The artistic side of his character expressed itself through his writing, music and poetry. Gary was an incredible craftsman and was amazingly innovative. RHODES, Sora Anne Passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at the age of 97. Survived by her loving children: Doug (Maricel), Barbara; grandson Christopher (Trish); niece Darlene Koss and brother-in-law Don Withers. Sora is also survived by her loving cat, Chester. Predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Frank Rhodes. Born in Cochrane, Alberta, Sora made Calgary her home with Frank before retiring to the Okanagan in 1980. BECKER, Roy Addison June 24, 1927 - June 21, 2013 Roy passed away peacefully, in his sleep, at Kelowna General Hospital. He is survived by his loving wife, Dawn and her children, Bryan, Blake, Greg, Karen, Dean and their families along with his children, Marlene Richardson (Danny), Ron Becker (Debbie), Judy Frank (Dieter), his treasured grandchildren, Benjamin, Hayley, Troy, Lyndsay, Brandon and Emily, one cherished great-grandchild, Ada, his sister Lorraine and many nieces and nephews. Roy was predeceased by his parents Elsie and August Becker, 3 brothers Ed, George, Don, one sister Florence and his beloved youngest son Larry. Roy began his career with Canadian Pacific Railway as a telegraph operator. He worked in Oliver, B.C. for many years being promoted to Kelowna in 1970 as mobile supervisor until his retirement. He loved to recite poetry, was quick with the wit and enjoyed passing along nuggets of wisdom to the younger generation. He enjoyed many hobbies such as golf, baseball, curling, hockey and dancing with his favorite partner Dawn. He served several terms as President of the Seniors Club in Kelowna. His love of sports, music and a good lively debate has been his legacy which has passed on to his children and grandchildren. He will be greatly missed. A Celebration of Life will be held at Grace Lutheran Church, 1162 Hudson Rd., West Kelowna, B.C. on Saturday, July 6th at 1:00 P.M. HOFFMANN, Lisa It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and great grandmother on July 1, 2013 at the age of 87. Lisa was born in Schterbin Ukraine on March 30, 1926 and immigrated to Canada in 1952. She had a love of children and together with her husband raised six of her own. Her strength and sense of humour helped her to survive near starvation under Stalin, the 2nd World War and also enhanced her family life in the good years. She is predeceased by her husband, Adolf and is survived by daughters: Rita and Kathy; sons: Hermann, Erwin, Luther, Jim; as well as many grandchildren and great grandchildren. BROWNRIGG, Garrett (Garry) William, CD, Retired, 1932 - 2013 Passed away in Kelowna, BC. The only son of Dr. Garrett & Ena (Winsor) Brownrigg, Garry was raised in St. John's, Nfld. While attending McGill, he decided on a career change and joined the Canadian Army Special Force for Korea. He spent his military career as a transport officer, fixed wing pilot and a helicopter pilot, serving in Europe, the United States and Canada. During his working career Garry gave generously of his time to a number of charitable organizations including The Boys & Girls Club of Ottawa, Rotary Clubs International from St. John's, NL to Kelowna, BC where he was a recipient of the Paul Harris Award. Garry was also very active with the various Power Squadrons, Citizen on Patrol Units and a member of 883 (Kelowna) RCAF wing. Left to mourn his loss is Sheila (Down), his wife of 57 years; son Garry (Kelly), grandsons Evan & Patrick Brownrigg; son Geoffrey (Karen), granddaughters Megan, Julia, and Kimberly Brownrigg; son Chris (June), grandsons Bryan & David Brownrigg; granddaughters Jessica & Sarah, the daughters of his only daughter Heather who predeceased him in 2006. Also his sisters Ann (Bill) Church of Barrie, ON and Lynn Spracklin of St. John's, NL. Sisters in law Atho (Frank) Toth of Victoria, BC and Elaine Jeffery of Dartmouth, NS. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, July 5, 2013 at 11am at First Memorial Funeral Services, 1211 Sutherland Ave, Kelowna, BC. Born Margaret Duncan on November 22, 1920 at Penticton Hospital, she often reminisced about the changes she saw in the town she spent her whole life in. LAIDLAW, DOUGLAS, STEUART: Passed away in Penticton June 22, 2013 at the age of 70 years. Doug will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his sister Donna (Paul) Clarke, niece Tara Clarke, nephews Matthew Clarke and Ian Clarke as well as extended family, including aunts and cousins. Doug was born and raised in Summerland. After living away for many years, he moved back to the Okanagan later in life. He will be remembered for his love of family, his passionate interest in local history, and his love of the games of hockey and baseball. He enjoyed the company of other people and will be greatly missed by those who knew him. He particularly loved the music of the 1950's. This is for you, Doug - When My Blue Moon Turns to Gold Again.
