CALVERT, DIANE LOIS Born July 9, 1945, passed away peacefully after a long illness onSeptember 4, 2014. Diane is survived by her husband, Jim of 33 years; sister, Marie (Ted) of Prince Rupert, brother, Mel (Pat) of Kingston, Ontario; Jim's children, Jane and Ian; grandchildren, Lachlan, Brennan, Grace as well as many nieces, nephews and family members living in different parts of the world. Diane was born in Prince Rupert and began her working life in the fish canneries on the Skeena River operating a salmon filleting machine. When she graduated from school she began a career in bookkeeping and worked in Kamloops, Port Alberni, Victoria and Osoyoos before settling in Penticton, where she retired from White Kennedy Accounting Associates. Diane was always diligent and ambitious and while at White Kennedy she completed her ACIA studying in the evenings afterwork. She had a wild spirit of adventure and with Jim she visited Jordan, Egypt, Turkey, Hawaii, England, Scotland, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and Cuba. She was always active whether it be performing as a go-go dancer in a local band, climbing the mountain up to the Nabotean ruins in Petra, Jordan or walking to the top of Mt.Vesuvius in Italy. Her gentle and quiet demeanor and pleasant personality esteemed her among her contemporaries. She had a calming effect on people and at the top of Vesuvius when she came across a terrified girl who was flattened with fright, her back against the cliffface, Diane calmly took her hand and led her to the top. Diane was an integral part of the Penticton community. She was heavily involved with Critteraid, produced the Knights of Columbus bulletin for a number of years and assisted in many church activities. For 12 years she completed and submitted the gaming application forms for the Pope JohnXXIII assembly bringing $120,000 into the organization. In the arts she produced, stage-managed and was treasurer for many of theShakespeare plays produced in the summer. She regularly journeyed to Vancouver in the summer to participate in Baird on the Beach. She was also a volunteer usher at the Cleland Theatre and assisted with Ironman. Shakespeare's, Julius Caesar said. "Cowards die many times before their deaths. The valiant never taste of death but once." Diane was no coward. She was a warrior, fighting with her health from an early age when she contracted TB. The last few years she fought breast cancer, vasculitis, kidney failure and pneumonia. With grace and aplomb she lived until the end. A Funeral Mass will be held Thursday, September 11, 2014, 11:00 a.m. at St. Ann's Catholic Church (1296 Main St., Penticton) with a prayer service being held Wednesday evening, 7:00 p.m. also at the church.
