FRETWELL, Harold "Hal" Robert: Passed away peacefully in Kelowna, BC on August 24, 2015 at the age of 96. Predeceased by son Michael and wife of 58 years Joan, Hal is survived by his older sister Ruth, sons Gord (Kris) and Ron (Deanna), daughter-in-law Linda and grandchildren Stuart, Christopher, Gavin and Kelly. Harold was one of few remaining World War II veterans, having served as a lieutenant in the army's artillery division, primarily in Italy. After returning from service, he practiced law for forty years, starting his career in Prince George, BC and moving in the early sixties to Kelowna. Though a scholar by profession, Hal was often happiest working with his hands and would describe himself as a "decent rough carpenter", personally building his house in Prince George along with various recreational cabins. Hal was an avid reader, well-traveled, and he participated in a variety of sports throughout his life including fishing, curling and skiing. Boating, both sail and power, was also a big part of his life. Hal was a keen golfer and a member of the Kelowna Golf and Country Club for nearly four decades. He was a member of Rotary International, serving as president of the Kelowna chapter for a term. Hal was a person of great integrity, a gentleman and a gentle man, and although he tended to be a quiet person, those that knew him appreciated his wit and dry sense of humour. He had a capacity to accept others' flaws and to appreciate other points of view. Hal was always positive and his glass always more than half full. The family would like to extend its most sincere appreciation to his second family at Hawthorne Park and Orchard Manor. Their dedication, care and compassion, and obvious love for Dad will be remembered always. In memory of Hal, a donation could be made to a charity of your choice. Arrangements entrusted with First Memorial Funeral Services, Kelowna. 250-762-2299
