ANDERSON, John William "Jack" Passed away on November 22, 2013 at his home in Lake Country Lodge, with family at his side, at 98 years of age. Born in Moose Jaw, SK on August 17, 1915, Jack was the oldest of five siblings. In 1934 he joined the 77th Battery in Moose Jaw. In 1939 as war was declared the Battery became part of the 3rd Field Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery, and landed in Scotland on Christmas Eve, 1939. Jack served through the Battle of Britain and attained the rank of Sgt. Major. In 1943 they landed at Sicily as part of the British 8th Army; he saw action throughout the Italian Campaign, staged through France and Belgium, participated in the liberation of Holland, and returned home after 5 1/2 years overseas. It is believed that Jack was the last surviving member of the 77th Battery. After the war Jack became a firefighter for the City of Moose Jaw, retiring in 1980 as Deputy Fire Chief, and moving to North Vancouver where he met and married his wife Lee. They soon moved to the Okanagan following family, ultimately settling in Winfield. Always engaged in volunteer activities both in Moose Jaw and in Winfield, he still found time to engage in his favorite pastimes - fishing, curling, Legion activities with Branch 189 in Oyama .... and more fishing. For several years he was Service Officer for the Legion, and in 2006 he was honoured to be one of only 69 Canadians to receive the Minister of Veterans Affairs Special Commendation for service to other veterans. Jack was sadly predeceased by his wife Onolee ("Lee") May Harris Dennett in 2010; his only sister Christina St. Germain; brothers Frederick, Gordon and Douglas; daughter Sheila Francis; and granddaughter Christina Dennett. He is survived by stepsons Bob (Marion) Dennett of Ladner, BC and Barry (Cindy) Dennett of Westbank, BC; granddaughter Kimberley (Al) Cameron of Pritchard, BC and great-grandchildren Austin and Kylie. He will be greatly missed by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins in Scotland, Ontario, and across Canada to Vancouver Island. He will be especially missed by nieces Suzanne St. Germain and family of Kelowna, and Janice (Scott) McCardle Armstrong and family of Winnipeg, who he helped in so very many ways. Cremation will be followed by a Service of Remembrance, to be held at a later date in the Field of Honour, Lakeview Memorial Gardens. The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the staff and volunteers at Lake Country Lodge and Manor for five years of sharing laughter and tears, for ensuring that Jack and Lee were together, and for the utmost of care and CARING for both Jack and Lee. We could not have done it without you. We watch him leave our shore and lament as he disappears over the horizon - But out of sight are those gathered on a far off shore chanting "Here he comes!"
