YATES, Peter, Douglas April 6, 1954 - December 10, 2013 Traveler. Teacher. Mentor. Peter passed away peacefully at his Cobble Hill home after treatment for Lymphoma. Born in Chemainus and raised in Penticton. Predeceased by parents Douglas and Bibsy Yates. Leaving behind wife Joanne, daughters Aly and Lizzie, and faithful dog Rug(by). Also families of brother Norman (Wendy), Andrew, Robin and their mother Adrienne; brother Michael (Jul), Dru, Jana, Kristin; sister Janine (Keith), Claire (Peno), Erin, Marten. Peter began his world travels as an Outward Bound instructor in Keremeos and New Zealand. He held degrees in education: B.Ed (UBC) and a Masters in Leadership Training. While at UBC, he was a successful varsity rower and then coach. He had a career at Shawnigan Lake School teaching English, coaching rowing and instructing outdoor education, including fast water rescue. He spent many summers as a river guide on remote BC rivers. At Shawnigan, he developed a youth leadership program through hands on projects in developing nations. As a legacy, the Peter Yates Centre now stands at Shawnigan Lake School as a centre for leadership and international study. His life will be celebrated by his many friends, colleagues and teammates at Shawnigan Lake School at a later date in February.
