GROOT, THECLA M. A. September 18,1924 - April 28, 2014 It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of Thecla Maria Antoinette Groot at Kiwanis Lodge in Nanaimo on April 28, 2014. Thecla will be missed by her loving family; husband Simon and daughters Bernice (Chris) Heffring, Jackie (Mike) Cullen, and Barb (Tim) O'Rourke; 12 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Thecla and Simon were married in 1947 and emigrated from Haarlem, Netherlands to Calgary, AB in 1957. Thecla loved her family immensely and always looked forward to their visits. She loved her weekly bridge games and even played for two hours last Thursday before her passing. She was a fashion designer and dressmaker, specializing in wedding dresses. Thecla was a devout Christian and active in the Catholic Church in Penticton for many years. She was a co-leader of the Shekina Prayer group and coordinator of the liturgy and R.C.I.A. at St. John Vianey Church. She was dedicated, loving, hardworking, and devoted to her family as a mother, Oma, and Great Oma. Her family and friends will dearly miss her. Mass and the celebration of Thecla's life will be held on Friday May 23, 2014 at 11:00 am at St. Peter's Church, 301 Machleary Street, Nanaimo, BC. Flowers are appreciated or donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
