KINGSBURY, Elizabeth Jean Jean Kingsbury passed away in Kelowna on April 19th, 2014. She is survived by her brother John Parkinson, her children Katharine (Jim) Rogers, John (Maureen) Kingsbury, and Bruce (Beverley) Kingsbury; her grandchildren Ian (Kathy) Rogers, Allison (Todd) Temple, Jennifer Kingsbury, Bryan Kingsbury, and Elanor (Mike) Kingsbury; and her great grandchildren Kaitlin, Evan, and Taryn Temple. Jean was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Thomas Kingsbury, in August 1999, by her sister Doris Hamilton in February 2014, and by her nephew Scott Hamilton in August 2013. Jean was born in Toronto, ON, oldest child to Fred and Elsie Parkinson on December 19, 1919. She attended Havergal College and University of Toronto, majored in music, and became a very accomplished pianist. She married her husband Tom in Toronto on June 12, 1941, and spent the war years in Toronto while Tom was overseas. After the war, the family moved to Montreal, Edmonton, and finally Kamloops, B.C., which became her home for most of her life. Jean was a remarkable lady. She had a gift of befriending people that she met, showing great listening skills, counsel and empathy towards others. She gave so much to her community, the Kamloops United Church, the PEO, and many other charitable and social organizations to which she belonged. The family loved to sail, and owned a sailboat at Shuswap Lake. After the children left, she and Tom sailed the west coast of B.C. in their boat, the Aquila, with family and friends. As a couple, they hiked, travelled, white water canoed and explored areas of Canada that were well off the beaten track. While in Kamloops, Jean became a piano teacher, and for over 30 years, taught generations of students before retiring in her mid-80's. She played for the choir at the church, as well as the Happy Choristers choral group that performed throughout western Canada. When she could no longer play her grand piano in 2012, she graciously gifted it to Thompson Rivers University. She was a yoga instructor for many years. Even in her late 80's, when she was virtually blind, she walked the mile to go downtown every day to shop or visit. The couple loved Springer Spaniels, and there was always a dog (or two) in the family over a span of 60 years. Jean had a keen and enquiring mind, a fascination for history and cultures, and was always eager to engage in conversation with others to learn of their life experiences. Even when she gradually lost her hearing and her vision, that did not stop her enthusiasm to meet and converse with people. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the management and staff of Orchard Manor at Hawthorne Park for the excellent and special care they showed to Jean during her time there. A memorial will be held at a later date in Kamloops. If friends so desire, memorial donations can be made to Doctors without Borders - 720 Spadina Avenue, Suite 402, Toronto, Ontario, Canada M5S 2T9.
