HANDFIELD, ADA HELEN: May 1, 1920 - April 25, 2014 Ada passed away peacefully on April 25 at Haven Hill Retirement Centre, Penticton one week before her 94th birthday. She will be lovingly remembered by her sons Robert (Maggie) of Kaleden and Adrian of Cloverdale, BC, grandchildren Laura (Neil) of Langley, Robert (Tracy) of Summerland, Tom of Terrace and Bethany of Penticton, and four great grandchildren, Dawson and Ally of Summerland and Macaila and Laniah of Campbell River as well as nieces and nephews throughout western Canada. She was predeceased by sons Ronnie and Donald, husband Wilfred and brother Bill. Born in Dodsland, SK, Ada was the second child of William and Ada Graham. While still a teenager, Ada moved to Vancouver to find work and life off the farm. She found both and the love of her life, Wilf Handfield, another migrant from SK. With Wilf in the Royal Canadian Navy during WWII, the young family was on the move, from Vancouver to Victoria, then St John's NL and finally back to Vancouver. Tragedy struck in 1951 with the accidental death of their infant son Ronnie - a blow that stayed with Ada all her life. She seemed to compensate by taking in a number of foster children over a period of years. Ada's passion was family while her hobbies were cards (canasta and bridge), knitting, travel and volunteering. After she and Wilf moved to Surrey in the 1960's, she devoted thousands of hours of her time to the Canadian Legion Women's Auxiliary and Surrey Memorial Hospital Auxiliary where she served as President for three terms. She and Wilf loved to travel in their camper van with Reno being a favorite destination. They also enjoyed taking the grandkids camping and they will remember those trips with Grandma and Grandpa all their lives. Ada will be remembered for her generous and loving nature and ready smile. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Haven Hill for the loving care they gave Ada for the past eight years. A family celebration of life will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to The Alzheimer Society of Canada (alzheimer.ca)
